Worried about the listeria outbreak due to conventional smoked salmon consumption? Here is what to eat instead.
If the destruction of our oceans from unsustainable overfishing methods did not convince you to switch to Revo Foods, the latest news from the United Kingdom will do the trick. We are not referring to the recent announcement of Queen Elizabeth’s death, but rather to the latest food safety warning. According to the BBC, food safety experts in the United Kingdom warned the public of the dangers of ready-to-eat smoked fish. That is because smoked salmon has now been linked to a listeria outbreak in the country.
As the BBC reports, a joint FSA investigation with the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has identified 14 linked cases of listeriosis in England and Scotland since 2020. More than half of these cases can be traced to 2022. The majority of the people who suffered from listeria reported eating ready-to-eat smoked fish. This doesn’t come as a surprise, since the UK government had informed the public that an investigation was ongoing regarding the safety of ready-to-eat smoked fish.
It is worth mentioning that smoked fish are not the only types of food that can be contaminated by listeria. The recent outbreak, however, seems to be attributed to conventional smoked salmon slices. The bacteria can grow on the food items, even when chilled in the fridge, and the only way to reduce the risk is by cooking the fish till steaming hot.
Listeria is a genus of bacteria that can cause listeriosis in humans. This is a gastrointestinal disease that occurs after the consumption of contaminated food. Although the infection usually resolves on its own, certain groups of people may have serious complications. In 20% of serious cases, listeriosis can lead to death.
People who are pregnant, who are over 65 years old, or who have a compromised immune system, are particularly at risk. Although common symptoms are nausea and fever, in severe cases, listeriosis can cause sepsis and meningoencephalitis. These are life-threatening conditions that need urgent intervention.
It is also worth mentioning that listeriosis is particularly dangerous during pregnancy. This is one of the reasons why doctors usually advise women to avoid seafood while pregnant. Experts warn that it may cause miscarriages and severe sepsis or meningitis in newborn babies. Avoiding cold-served food, such as conventional smoked salmon, is advised in these cases.
